City’s Compost Facility is now OPEN!

The City’s Wood Recovery and Compost Facility located at 1420 E. 11th Street, which is east of 11th and Haskell Avenue, over the railroad tracks will be open to the public on Saturdays, now through mid-December, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for the following:

 

• Residents may drop off brush and other yard waste which includes leaves, grass clippings, garden waste, and prunings from trees and shrubs.  Cost: $5 per pickup truck load (more for larger trucks).  Cash only.
• Residents may purchase compost or woodchips.  Self-load only, bring a shovel.  Cost: $10 per pickup truck load (more for larger trucks).  Cash only.

• Changing our Neighborhood Name

  Our neighborhood name of “Pinckney” was recently changed to “Pinkney.” This change occurred because Pinckney with a ‘c’ was associated with Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, a Revolutionary War general who signed the Constitution and who also was a slaveholder who believed slavery was fundamental to the American way of life (he owned a large plantation in South Carolina). Given this problematic history, neighborhood residents voted to change our neighborhood name. To learn more about the year-long process, go to our dedicated webpage. The final round of voting ultimately landed on the name of “Pinkney” in honor of William Pinkney, who gave a famous anti-slavery speech in 1789.
