City’s Fall Compost and Woodchip Sale – October 5, 10, 11 & 12

This fall the City of Lawrence will hold the following compost and woodchip sales at the city’s Wood Recovery and Composting Facility located at 1420 E. 11^th Street which is east of 11^th and Haskell Avenue, over the railroad tracks. The sales will be held rain or shine. CASH only.

 

OPENS EARLY FOR SELF-LOADERS ONLY: Compost and Woodchip Sale – Saturday October 5th from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.

• SELF-LOAD ONLY
• $10 per truck or trailer load; small quantities free.
• Please bring a shovel.
• Bring a tarp to secure woodchips in trucks and trailers to prevent littering the roadway.

Compost & Woodchip Sale – Thursday through Saturday, October 10, 11, 12 from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm or until supply is depleted.

• The city will load trucks and trailers.
• $10 per bucket load, equivalent to two cubic yards.
• Bring a tarp to secure woodchips in trucks and trailers to prevent littering the roadway.

Compost and woodchips are not intended for commercial applications, but rather for the citizens of Lawrence. Dump truck quantities are not allowed. The City cannot load trucks with ladder racks.

The City’s compost is made from the weekly curbside collection of residential yard waste, which includes grass, leaves, garden pruning, and small woody waste. Due to the length of the composting process and the biological changes that occur, 99 percent of all chemicals have dissipated prior to public distribution. City staff tests the compost for levels of ammonia and carbon dioxide; tests are also completed for pH and salinity.

Compost is a fertilizer, and is meant to be mixed into the soil. For food gardens, it is recommended to add up to 1-1/2 inches of compost to every six inches depth of tilled soil. Do not plant in 100 percent compost.Woodchips are used to cover the soil.

Woodchips help conserve water by reducing moisture evaporation from the soil. The woodchips the City sells are made from brush and tree debris dropped off from residential and commercial sources.

• Changing our Neighborhood Name

  Our neighborhood name of “Pinckney” was recently changed to “Pinkney.” This change occurred because Pinckney with a ‘c’ was associated with Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, a Revolutionary War general who signed the Constitution and who also was a slaveholder who believed slavery was fundamental to the American way of life (he owned a large plantation in South Carolina). Given this problematic history, neighborhood residents voted to change our neighborhood name. To learn more about the year-long process, go to our dedicated webpage. The final round of voting ultimately landed on the name of “Pinkney” in honor of William Pinkney, who gave a famous anti-slavery speech in 1789.
