Food Drive – October 12th, 19th & 26th at PNA Events

Yes, it’s October already! PNA has a number of fun and rewarding activities coming up this month: a park clean-up day on Saturday Oct. 12; our regular monthly meeting on Saturday Oct. 19; and our annual Trunk-or-Treat & Food Drive on Saturday Oct. 26. More information on each of them coming soon – so this is just a teaser to get you in the mood.

This is also an opportunity for you to get started on collecting food, personal care items and your spare change for the food drive. Each year we have paired our Trunk-or-Treat with a food drive for the Just Food Douglas County food bank. We’ve collected about 100 pounds of food each of the past two years. We would love to at least double that amount this year. To do so, we’ll be collecting donations at each of our upcoming October events – with the big final push for collections at the Trunk-or-Treat.

Below is information about what items Just Food has the most demand for so you can start stocking up. Bring your donations of food, personal care items and cash to any of these events:

Pinckney Parks Clean-up Day – Saturday October 12th in Clinton, Constant and Woody Parks. Meet at 9:30 am in the park of your choice for clean-up. Meet back at Clinton Park at 10:45 for light refreshments.

PNA Monthly Meeting – Saturday October 19th at 10:00 am in meeting room D-South of Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Trunk-or-Treat – Saturday October 26th in the parking lot at Lawrence Memorial Hospital on 4th Street between Michigan and Arkansas Streets (entrance via Arkansas). Set-up for the Trunk-or-Treat starts at 3:00 pm and the event runs from 4 to 6:00 pm.

MOST NEEDED FOOD & PERSONAL CARE ITEMS

Baby Food, Beans, Canned Meats (tuna & chicken), Canned Pasta (e.g., Spaghetti O’s), Canned Soup, Canned Vegetables, Cereal, Crackers, Diapers, Hamburger Helper, Jelly, Juice, Pasta, Pasta Sauce, Peanut Butter, Pork & Beans, Rice, Toilet Paper, and CASH (every dollar makes a difference – as little as 20 cents can provide a meal to someone in need)

ABOUT JUST FOOD DOUGLAS COUNTY

Just Food provides emergency food free of charge to residents in Douglas County. In an effort to more effectively and efficiently address hunger in Douglas County, Just Food serves as the Douglas County Food Bank supplying partner agencies with adequate food supplies to meet growing demand, operates the largest emergency food assistance program in Douglas County, and administers two government supplemental food program and a monthly mobile food pantry.

Just Food currently provides free, emergency food boxes and bags to more than 8,000 Douglas County residents each month and distributed more than 600,000 meals in the last 12 months. Almost 40% of those fed are children. The food bags for household sizes of 1-3 people would cost $45 retail. The boxes for household sizes of 4-7 people would cost $60 at a local grocery store. Just Food provides these bags and boxes for free to any Douglas County resident whose income is within 185% of the federal poverty level.

Hunger knows no season, and the need for food is always exists. Every dollar makes a difference. For as little as 20 cents, you can provide a meal to a neighbor in need. When you donate to Just Food, 100 percent of your contribution stays in Douglas County to feed hungry people.

• Changing our Neighborhood Name

  Our neighborhood name of “Pinckney” was recently changed to “Pinkney.” This change occurred because Pinckney with a ‘c’ was associated with Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, a Revolutionary War general who signed the Constitution and who also was a slaveholder who believed slavery was fundamental to the American way of life (he owned a large plantation in South Carolina). Given this problematic history, neighborhood residents voted to change our neighborhood name. To learn more about the year-long process, go to our dedicated webpage. The final round of voting ultimately landed on the name of “Pinkney” in honor of William Pinkney, who gave a famous anti-slavery speech in 1789.
