Help Develop the Community’s Priorities for Walking

Public involvement and input are essential to the success of the of the *Regional Pedestrian Plan.* As a result, the Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), in coordination with the City of Lawrence, City of Eudora, and City of Baldwin City has launched an online survey. A link to the survey is available on the MPO webpage at www.lawrenceks.org/mpo/PedPlan/survey now through April 25. Public participation in the survey will help the study team better define priorities in the region.

In addition, the MPO staff will be present at the following community events to collect input from the public:
-Wednesday, March 25 before and after the Safe Routes for All Town Hall from 6:30 -9:30 p.m. at Liberty Hall (644 Massachusetts St.) in Lawrence.
-Saturday, March 28 at the Eudora Health & Bicycle Fair from 10:00am-1:00pm at the Eudora Police & Fire Station (840 Main St.) in Eudora.
-Saturday, April 18 at the Baldwin City Community Wellness Festival from 9:00am – 12:00pm at the Collins Sports & Convention Center (524 6th St.) in Baldwin City.

The input collected will be blended with the sidewalk and ADA ramp inventories to draft new or revised policies, programs and projects designed to make Douglas County more Pedestrian/Walk Friendly with consideration to the 5 E’s (Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement and Evaluation). The plan will identify action steps for
Lawrence, Eudora and Baldwin City to continue integrating pedestrian planning into community and transportation planning processes.

• Changing our Neighborhood Name

  Our neighborhood name of “Pinckney” was recently changed to “Pinkney.” This change occurred because Pinckney with a ‘c’ was associated with Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, a Revolutionary War general who signed the Constitution and who also was a slaveholder who believed slavery was fundamental to the American way of life (he owned a large plantation in South Carolina). Given this problematic history, neighborhood residents voted to change our neighborhood name. To learn more about the year-long process, go to our dedicated webpage. The final round of voting ultimately landed on the name of “Pinkney” in honor of William Pinkney, who gave a famous anti-slavery speech in 1789.
