Meeting to discuss proposed new Police Headquarters on McDonald Drive – Sept. 20th

PNA Meeting – Sat. Sept. 20 – 10:00 a.m. – Lawrence Memorial Hospital – Room D-North

PNA’s September 20th meeting will focus on answering any questions you have about the proposed new Police Headquarters to be built north of 2nd Street on McDonald Drive on the western border of Pinckney Neighborhood. The general election in November will include a question on the ballot asking for approval of a bond issuance to pay for the new facility. Police Chief Tarik Khatib and City Commissioners Bob Schumm and Dr. Terry Riordan will be in attendance.

The proposal includes purchase by the City of a large plot of land along McDonald Drive stretching from the toll plaza to the north to the Lawrence School District office complex to the south, and from McDonald Drive on the west to the property line with houses/apartments on the east. This property is currently owned by Hallmark. The City has entered into a letter agreement with Hallmark to purchase the property if the bond issue passes. The City also proposes to use/sell portions of that property that are not needed for the Police HQ. We have been assured by the City that no decisions have been made regarding the use of the property not needed for the Police HQ, but several options are under consideration, including a vehicle maintenance/parking facility for the Lawrence School District, a family fun center proposed by a local entrepreneur, and a baseball field to replace Woody Park so that Woody Park’s current location can be turned into parking for Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Karen Shumate, COO for LMH, and Janice Early, Community Relations Director for LMH, will be on hand to take your questions about LMH parking and other issues.

The PNA meeting will start at 10:00 a.m. on Sat. Sept. 20th, with a brief general business meeting, followed at 11:00 a.m. with the question and answer session with City and LMH officials about the proposed Police HQ and related issues.

• Changing our Neighborhood Name

  Our neighborhood name of “Pinckney” was recently changed to “Pinkney.” This change occurred because Pinckney with a ‘c’ was associated with Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, a Revolutionary War general who signed the Constitution and who also was a slaveholder who believed slavery was fundamental to the American way of life (he owned a large plantation in South Carolina). Given this problematic history, neighborhood residents voted to change our neighborhood name. To learn more about the year-long process, go to our dedicated webpage. The final round of voting ultimately landed on the name of “Pinkney” in honor of William Pinkney, who gave a famous anti-slavery speech in 1789.
