July is INDEPENDENT RETAILER MONTH

Massachusetts Street, Lawrence, Kansas

Independent Retailer Month in July offers an opportunity to show your local small business how much you appreciate them.

Small businesses employ approximately 51 percent of the U.S. non-farm workforce according to the Census Bureau and the Small Business Administration. Nearly all those businesses are independent retailers. They supply products and services we can’t get from big box stores.

Achievements for 2018 include holding an outdoor movie night and developing a working plan for accomplishing social-related projects in the neighborhood.

For 2019, we plan to continue working on long-term goals such as improving self-promotion (through the LJ World, for example), or getting involved in local parades. We’ll also be developing action plans for strategies around land use, mobility/accessibility, and environmental concerns.
