Help us Clean Pinckney – May 5th

This Saturday, May 5th, Pinckney will have its annual Neighborhood Clean Up. All Pinckney residents are welcome to join us. We will meet at the Clinton Park shelter at 10:00 am and disperse from there to Sandra Shaw, Woody, Constant, and Burcham Parks.

PNA welcomes new Vice President and Communications Coordinator, and returning Secretary

Please welcome Dustin Stumblingbear as the new Vice President of PNA! Dustin was elected for a two year term at PNA’s annual meeting in February. He is very enthusiastic about the great work-life balance our neighborhood offers and he looks forward to helping Pinckney Neighborhood grow and thrive.

We’re also very grateful that Kim Heck accepted another two year term as the PNA Secretary. Kim has steadfastly kept track of PNA’s meeting outcomes and kept us organized and up-to-date. Thank you, Kim!

Bart Littlejohn and Pat Miller continue in their roles and PNA President and Treasurer, respectively, for the remaining year of the their two year terms.

We are also very excited to announce that Phillip Jones has been selected as PNA’s new Communications Coordinator! Phil, who is a Pinckney resident, brings to the position a wealth of knowledge and experience with various media outreach resources. Please welcome Phil and look forward to a fun and invigorated PNA media presence!

City Housing Study – Take the Resident Survey Online

The City of Lawrence has engaged BBC Research & Consulting to complete a housing study for the City. This study will be used as a tool to help prioritize affordable housing needs. The City encourages residents to complete an online resident survey, which will help provide valuable information to the consultants. The survey data will go directly to BBC Research & Consulting and the information compiled for the housing study report.

Please take a few minutes and complete the survey and feel free to share the survey link with other residents. If you have participated in the phone survey that is being conducted, your feedback will be noted as part of that effort and there is no need to complete this online version. The consultants are utilizing surveys and focus groups to conduct outreach in various ways to engage as many residents as possible as part of the study.

PNA Annual Meeting and Election of Officers – Saturday, Feb. 17th

Everyone who lives in the Pinckney Neighborhood is automatically a member of the Pinckney Neighborhood Association. Everyone is encouraged to attend the monthly PNA Meetings and to run for office or work on a committee!  Officer elections are held during the February meeting and we welcome new member participation. The Vice President and Secretary positions will be open for election.

Help spread the word: If you have a neighbor that may be interested in getting involved please encourage them to attend the next meeting, sign up for the PNA E-news or contact us at pinckney.neighborhood@gmail.com.

Additionally, we will have guests Shannon Oury from the Lawrence-Douglas Housing Authority discussing a proposed housing project with Bert Nash and a representative from the KU Big Event to discuss this year’s volunteer work day.

The Pinckney Neighborhood Association is seeking a part-time contractor to serve as its Communications Coordinator. If you are interested in applying, please review the job description and expectations listed below. This contract position pays up to $15/hr, depending on qualifications, and generally requires about 10-15 hours a month. All are welcome to apply.

TO APPLY: Applications should include a cover letter expressing interest in the position and a resume, with one or more references, demonstrating that the applicant possesses the qualifications and expectations required of the Coordinator. Applications will be accepted until February 20, 2018, with an expected start date of March 1, 2018.

PNA COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary: The Communications Coordinator for the Pinckney Neighborhood Association (PNA) is responsible for completion or coordination of communications and related responsibilities, in coordination with the PNA Board, including:

  • coordinating and attending regular monthly meetings (3rd Saturday each month at 10 a.m.)
  • drafting quarterly PNA reports to the City of Lawrence
  • planning for and coordinating yearly events (e.g. summer picnic and fall Trunk-or-Treat)
  • preparing 4 to 6 newsletter or postcard mailings and monthly MailChimp e-newsletters with news and notices affecting the neighborhood
  • maintaining PNA email inbox and responding to emails, as directed by the PNA Board
  • coordinating signage and other advertising for PNA events, and
  • other various tasks delegated from Board.

Supervision: Decisions about the selection of the contract Coordinator are made by the PNA Board, and the President supervises the planning and completion of tasks. Coordinator position contracts are completed for no longer than 12 months, from August 1 (or date of hiring) to July 31.

Annual evaluations will be conducted in June. If needed, the position will be advertised in July, with a coordinator to be selected to begin on September.

Compensation: The Coordinator is a contractor to PNA. The Coordinator is expected to work 10 -15 hours per month at a pay rate of up to $15 per hour, depending on qualifications of the successful applicant.

Expectations/Qualifications:

The Coordinator is expected to maintain professional demeanor and appearance while representing PNA, and to schedule time efficiently, and work through objectives to meet goals and deadlines on time.

The Coordinator shall:

  • have excellent organizational, writing, editing, verbal and interpersonal skills;
  • have ready access to a computer and the internet and proficiency with, and access to, Word, Excel, and Publisher software (or compatible software);
  • be knowledgeable and proficient in (or be prepared to immediately take appropriate training for) the social media platforms used by PNA, including Facebook, WordPress and MailChimp; and
  • live within the limits of the City of Lawrence or Douglas County, Kansas.

Proficiency in a language in addition to English would be of interest to PNA, but is not required for this position.

Trunk or Treat – Sun. Oct. 29th from 3 to 5 – LMH parking lot

Get your costumes and trunks ready! Trunk-or-Treat is back! Saturday October 29th – set-up starts at 2; trunk-or-treaters are welcome from 3 to 5. Lawrence Memorial Hospital parking lot (enter at 4th and Arkansas).

All residents of Pinckney Neighborhood and Old West Lawrence as well as all families of Pinckney School students are welcome.

It’s FREE, it’s FUN and it’s EASY to get involved. We need your trunks and games so there are plenty of activities for the kids. Just decorate your trunk with a Halloween theme or set up a game and hand out candy, trinkets, etc. to the kids. You can keep it simple, or you can go all out!

Some of the confirmed Trunk-or-Treat participants include Fire Station No. 1, Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Omega Phi Alpha Sorority, and of course the PNA Go Fish game!

Collecting Donations for Health Care Access!
Each year we also support a local social service organization. This year we are again collecting donations of cash and needed items for Health Care Access, which is located at 330 Maine Street. You can drop off your donations at the PNA table (next to the Go Fish game).

HCA serves as a welcoming health home in Douglas County for persons with limited financial means. It create access to a continuum of community based services to promote health and well-being. Through an active collaborative spirit it advocates for healthy people and communities. Throughout two decades of service to Douglas County, HCA has provided primary care services, referrals to specialists, prescription medication, and health education to over 14,000 of our friends and neighbors, without incurring debt and without federal funding.

In addition to cash, here’s a list of the most needed items for HCA’s over-the-counter Med Room:

Note – packages of meds are not split, so other than allergy meds and vitamins, they mostly need smaller package sizes.  Also, HCA can always use pill splitters!

Pinckney Neighborhood’s first annual neighborhood-wide sale – Saturday, September 16, 2017!

Beginning at 8:00 AM, your Pinckney neighbors will be peddling their retired wares at their individual residences for the good of all! Click here for a map of sale sites, which will be made available on our Facebook Page and the LJ World, wait for the day of the sale, and get to treasure hunting!

The PNA sale is scheduled to take place on the same day, and in partnership with, Old West Lawrence’s Annual Neighborhood Garage Sale, and it will no doubt prove an exciting event for both of our communities, separated only by 6th Street. We will celebrate with a potluck afterwards at Clinton Park from 5-8:00 pm.

PNA’s active participants represent you and your neighbors’ best interests in a number of community venues, and we strive to create fun, seasonal community-building events for our beloved Pinckney neighborhood.
