Part Time Job Opening – PNA Communications Coordinator

The Pinckney Neighborhood Association (PNA) is seeking a part-time Communications Coordinator. If you are interested in applying, please review the summary of the job description and expectations listed below. The position pays up to $15 per hour, depending on skills, and generally requires about 20 hours a month. All are welcome to apply; PNA is an equal opportunity contractor.  Applications accepted until October 1: start date as soon as the coordinator is chosen and hired. The Coordinator’s contract will begin as soon as possible and will be completed on July 31, 2016, which is the end of PNA’s grant year. Renewal of the contact is possible following an annual evaluation to be conducted in June. If needed, the position will be advertised in July for the following grant year.

Position Summary: The Coordinator for the PNA is responsible for completion or coordination of communications and related responsibilities, including:
•coordinating and attending regular meetings
•filing quarterly PNA reports with the City of Lawrence
•planning for and coordinating yearly events
•preparing 4 to 6 newsletter or postcard mailings and monthly e-newsletters with news and notices affecting the neighborhood
•maintaining PNA email inbox and responding to emails, as directed by the PNA Board
•coordinating signage and advertising for PNA events
•other various tasks as assigned by the PNA Board
The Coordinator will be expected to take initiative, contribute ideas, and keep the PNA Board informed of the Coordinator’s activities. The Coordinator must schedule time efficiently and work through objectives to meet goals and deadlines on time.

Skills and Attributes: PNA seeks a communications coordinator who has excellent organizational, writing, editing, verbal and interpersonal skills and proficiency with, and access to, Microsoft Word, g-mail, MailChimp, WordPress websites and Facebook. The coordinator must own or have access to a reliable computer with internet access. The Coordinator must maintain professional demeanor and appearance while representing PNA.

Pinckney Neighborhood Potluck Picnic POSTPONED!

Due to flooding in Burcham Park, we feel it’s best to postpone the picnic and reschedule it. Even thought the flooding is receding, we are concerned about soggy ground and the potential large mosquito population. We’re very sorry for any inconvenience, but Mother Nature was not cooperating with us.

Curbside Bulk Brush Pick-up – June 1st!

The City is again generously making arrangements for its forestry crew to bring their chipper/shredder through Pinckney Neighborhood to collect bulk brush from your residential curbside. Pinckney is the only neighborhood in the City that makes this request and we are very grateful that the City does its best to accommodate us.

Here are the rules:
• Stack brush with the cut ends towards & close to the street where you put your trash.
• Pick-up starts very early Monday morning June 1st (put your brush our Sunday night).
• Crews will not come back to pick up materials that are placed out late.
• No lumber, fence posts. pallets or railroad ties.
• City crews are not allowed to go on to private property to get to or clean up any piles.
• It will take about two days to make it through the whole neighborhood – please be patient.

If you see the crew out and about picking up the brush, please be sure to thank them for this extra service. This is one of the many reasons we love Pinckney Neighborhood and the City!

Electronics Recycling Event – Saturday May 2nd

The City of Lawrence invites residents and small businesses to recycle unused or obsolete electronic equipment. Electronic equipment may contain hazardous components such as lead, mercury and cadmium. Recycling your unwanted electronic equipment keeps these hazardous components out of the landfill.

Rain or Shine Event

DATE: Saturday, May 2nd
TIME: 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
LOCATION: KU Park & Ride East Parking Lot, Clinton Pkwy & Crestline Dr.

Electronic recycling at this event will be provided by MRC.
Items accepted for recycling:

• Computers
• Monitors
• Printers
• Copiers
• Scanners
• Fax Machines
• Televisions*
• Video and Audio Equipment
• Cell Phones and other Hand Held Devices
• Microwaves and other Small Appliances

* Recycling fee (Cash or Checks ONLY):

• $20.00 per CRT television under 27 inches
• $40.00 per CRT television over 27 inches/all big screen televisions/all console televisions
• no charge for other electronics

Items NOT accepted:

• Large Appliances (Refrigerators, AC Units, Dehumidifiers)
  • To request a residential special item pickup service for large appliances, please fill out this online form.
• Hazardous Waste (Fluorescent Light Bulbs, Compressed Gas Cylinders)

Compost/Woodchip Sale & Curbside Yard Waste Collection

Compost and Woodchip Sale Event – March 19^th, 20^th, 21^st

This spring the City’s Solid Waste Division will hold a Sale Event for compost and woodchips at the city’s Wood Recovery and Composting Facility Thursday through Saturday, March 19^th, 20^th, 21^st from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (the city will load trucks and trailers; $10 per bucket load/two cubic yards).  The sale will be held rain or shine.  Cash only.  Compost and woodchips are not intended for commercial applications but rather for the citizens of Lawrence.

Residential curbside yard waste collection on Mondays

The City’s Solid Waste Division will pick up yard waste on Mondays through mid-December, except on holidays.  Residents may set out yard waste by 6:00 a.m. on Mondays only in cans, city trash or yard waste carts (NO recycling carts), or compostable paper yard waste bags.  Bundles are also accepted (must not exceed 5-feet in length or 18-inches in diameter; must not weigh more than 65-pounds).  Bundles must be tied with durable string or twine (please do not use wire, duct tape, etc.).  For a complete list of yard waste collection guidelines, please visit www.lawrenceks.org/swm.

City’s Compost Facility is now OPEN!

The City’s Wood Recovery and Compost Facility located at 1420 E. 11th Street, which is east of 11th and Haskell Avenue, over the railroad tracks will be open to the public on Saturdays, now through mid-December, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for the following:

• Residents may drop off brush and other yard waste which includes leaves, grass clippings, garden waste, and prunings from trees and shrubs.  Cost: $5 per pickup truck load (more for larger trucks).  Cash only.
• Residents may purchase compost or woodchips.  Self-load only, bring a shovel.  Cost: $10 per pickup truck load (more for larger trucks).  Cash only.

KDOT Open House Set to Discuss West Leg of K-10 Improvements

You’re invited to join the Kansas Department of Transportation to learn more about the K-10 West Leg South Lawrence Trafficway (SLT) Concept Study and provide input on preliminary improvement options. The public information open house will be held on Tuesday, March 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Southwest Middle School, 2511 Inverness Drive. The public is welcome to stop by anytime during this meeting to speak with the study team. There will be no formal presentation.

The concept study will assess existing and future traffic and safety needs on this section of K-10 and identify a preferred 4-lane access controlled freeway concept that provides a safe and reliable solution.

The purpose of this study is to:
-Provide a corridor solution that is safe and meets demand and driver expectations.
-Evaluate interchange and intersection locations through the corridor to provide safe and efficient access with consideration for the local street network.
-Re-evaluate the environmental impacts associated with the preferred alternative.

Help Develop the Community’s Priorities for Walking

Public involvement and input are essential to the success of the of the *Regional Pedestrian Plan.* As a result, the Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), in coordination with the City of Lawrence, City of Eudora, and City of Baldwin City has launched an online survey. A link to the survey is available on the MPO webpage at www.lawrenceks.org/mpo/PedPlan/survey now through April 25. Public participation in the survey will help the study team better define priorities in the region.

In addition, the MPO staff will be present at the following community events to collect input from the public:
-Wednesday, March 25 before and after the Safe Routes for All Town Hall from 6:30 -9:30 p.m. at Liberty Hall (644 Massachusetts St.) in Lawrence.
-Saturday, March 28 at the Eudora Health & Bicycle Fair from 10:00am-1:00pm at the Eudora Police & Fire Station (840 Main St.) in Eudora.
-Saturday, April 18 at the Baldwin City Community Wellness Festival from 9:00am – 12:00pm at the Collins Sports & Convention Center (524 6th St.) in Baldwin City.

The input collected will be blended with the sidewalk and ADA ramp inventories to draft new or revised policies, programs and projects designed to make Douglas County more Pedestrian/Walk Friendly with consideration to the 5 E’s (Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement and Evaluation). The plan will identify action steps for
Lawrence, Eudora and Baldwin City to continue integrating pedestrian planning into community and transportation planning processes.

• Changing our Neighborhood Name

  Our neighborhood name of “Pinckney” was recently changed to “Pinkney.” This change occurred because Pinckney with a ‘c’ was associated with Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, a Revolutionary War general who signed the Constitution and who also was a slaveholder who believed slavery was fundamental to the American way of life (he owned a large plantation in South Carolina). Given this problematic history, neighborhood residents voted to change our neighborhood name. To learn more about the year-long process, go to our dedicated webpage. The final round of voting ultimately landed on the name of “Pinkney” in honor of William Pinkney, who gave a famous anti-slavery speech in 1789.
