Trash Service & Recycling Information for the Holidays

Happy Holidays!  Here’s some helpful information about City services!

Residential Trash Service – During the weeks of Christmas and New Years, residential trash service regularly scheduled for Wednesdays will occur on Thursday, and service regularly scheduled for Thursdays will occur on Friday.

Tree Recycling – After Christmas, please place your live-cut tree at the curb or alley for collection on Monday, December 30^th or Monday, January 6^th.  The trees will be used for wildlife habitat.  Please remove all artificial items including tinsel, lights, and tree stand, and have your tree set out by 6:00 a.m. For more information, visit <a title=”www.LawrenceRecycles.org” href=”http://www.LawrenceRecycles.org”>www.LawrenceRecycles.org

Christmas Lights Recycling – Does anyone know where light strings can be recycled in Lawrence? If so, please contact us and we’ll spread the word.

City of Lawrence Sponsors Holiday Toy and Food Drive – Curbside pick-up Dec 2 & 9

There are many great ways to give back to the community over the holidays. Here’s an opportunity the City of Lawrence is sponsoring:

On Monday, December 2nd, and Monday, December 9th (weather permitting), the City of Lawrence will be picking up new unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items for donation along the regularly scheduled yard waste collection routes. All toys collected will be donated to the Lawrence Police Department’s Blue Santa Program and all food collected will be donated to Just Food, the Lawrence-Douglas County Food Bank.

Blue Santa asks that you donate new, unwrapped toys (for children under the age of 17) and/or grocery gift cards ($25.00 increments). Just Food asks that you donate any non-perishable food items. Some of the most needed items include boxed cereal, canned fruit and whole grain pasta.

Please set out any donation items next to your yard waste on either Monday for collection. If you do not wish to set the item out at the curb or do not have residential yard waste collection, please drop the donation items off directly at Just Food (1000 E. 11th Street) or any Toys 4 Tots collection bin

Please note, if yard waste collection is cancelled due to inclement weather on either December 2nd or 9th, the toy and food collection will not occur either. Instructions will be posted with the notice of service cancellation. (http://lawrence-ks.toysfortots.org)

Blue Santa Program
The Blue Santa Program was organized in 2011 by the men and women of the Lawrence, Kansas Police Department to provide toys and food for those who are less fortunate, living within the city limits of Lawrence, Kansas. Each year the Blue Santa Program provides every child in the family under the age of 17 with three wrapped gifts and a gift card from a local grocery store to purchase food for their holiday dinner. Lawrence Police Department personnel will deliver the wrapped gifts to the children and their families the week before Christmas. (http://www.lawrencebluesanta.org/)

Just Food
Just Food is the food bank in Douglas County, supplying more than 40 partner agencies with food donated from food drives, as well as access to frozen meat, fresh produce and bread. Just Food also provides direct service to clients: it operates a food pantry, administers two federal food commodities programs, holds a monthly mobile food pantry, and participates in cooking and nutrition classes for low-income residents. Just Food and its partners play a key role in fighting hunger in our community by increasing the availability of a variety of foods, while helping to reduce waste and discarded food. The City of Lawrence and the University of Kansas Bring National Recycling Celebration to Town

Friday, November 15, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, the City of Lawrence and the University of Kansas will host a panel of experts to answer your recycling questions and present a short documentary film in the auditorium of Ecumenical Christian Ministries (ECM) located at 1204 Oread Avenue.

Lawrence and the University of Kansas are joining thousands of local organizers holding recycling events across the country to celebrate America Recycles Day, a national initiative by Keep America Beautiful and the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. This year’s America Recycles Day theme, “I Want To Be Recycled,” will help to educate people about the importance of recycling to our economy and environmental well-being as well as motivate occasional recyclers to become everyday recyclers.

On Friday at the ECM, the following individuals will answer questions about recycling from students and residents:

• Lydia Gibson, Missouri Organic Recycling Project Manager
• Kathy Richardson, City of Lawrence Solid Waste Manager
• Charlie Sedlock, Hamm Waste Services Director
• Donna Utter, Ripple Glass Director of Business Development

After the panel discussion, there will be a viewing of the documentary “The Wrong Bin”.  Emmy nominated filmmaker Krishnan Vasudevan documents the trials and triumphs of the curbside recycling program in New York City.  The audience is invited to continue the community recycling conversation after the film.

PNA Joint Meeting with Old West Lawrence & Pinckney Elementary School Principal

This Saturday, November 16^th – from 10 to about noon in Meeting Room D-South of Lawrence Memorial Hospital – is a special meeting for the Pinckney Neighborhood Association. We will be joined by members of the Old West Lawrence Neighborhood Association to have a meet & greet session with Kirsten Wondra, the new principal at Pinckney Elementary School. That portion of the meeting will start at about 10:45 and we’ll be serving light refreshments.

In addition, we’ll have a quick regular PNA business meeting and talk about a proposal the City Public Works department is preparing to address brick streets in the City, including several streets in the eastern portion of the Pinckney Neighborhood. The City invites comments regarding the proposal, which will be submitted to the City Commission for consideration in about December.

Electronic Recycling Event – Sat. Nov. 9th – 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. @ Free State High School

The City of Lawrence is sponsoring another Electronic Recycling Event on Saturday, November 9th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Free State High School in the NE parking lot, 4700 Overland Drive. This is a rain or shine event.

Items accepted for recycling are computers, monitors, printers, copiers, scanners, fax machines, televisions, video and audio equipment, microwaves and other small appliances, cell phones and other hand held devices. There is a recycling fee for televisions, $15.00 per CRT television under 27 inches and $35.00 per CRT television over 27 inches/all big screen televisions/all console televisions.  There are no charges for other electronic equipment. Fees may be paid by cash or check.

Electronic recycling will be provided by Midwest Recycling Center (MRC).

Items not accepted at Saturday’s electronic recycling event include large appliances and household hazardous materials such as paint, used motor oil, pesticides, and fluorescent bulbs. For information on how to dispose of large appliances and household hazardous waste, call the city’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Division at 832-3030.

Congratulations Pinckney Neighborhood – Great Trunk-or-Treat & Food Drive!

Pinckney Neighbors once again joined together for a wonderful community building event and community service project. We learned from Just Food that the donations collected at the Saturday October 26 Trunk-or-Treat added up to 191 pounds of food and $66! Just Food commends our efforts and passes on their sincere thanks for all Pinckney Neighborhood has done to help address food insecurity in Douglas County.

And on top of all that, there was a fantastic turnout of both trunks and treaters. Thanks to every one of the folks who set up the 19 trunks, booths and games, including many families, local businesses, a girl scout troop and the Tooth Fairy from the Douglas County Dental Clinic.  Thanks to the photography services of resident Don Pierce, we’ll soon have a bunch of photos in the Photo Gallery from the event. We estimate there were about 120 kids who attended and greatly enjoyed the afternoon.

Winners from the costume contest will be posted as soon as we get can post the pictures. We have the names of the “costumes” but not necessarily the names of the individuals in them, so we’ll be asking for your help in identifying them so we can deliver the certificates to them!

Trunk-or-Treat & Food Drive – Saturday Oct. 26th

It’s less than a week until the 3rd Annual Pinckney Neighborhood Trunk-or-Treat & Food Drive.  We need your help!

Everyone who lives or works in Pinckney Neighborhood or goes to Pinckney Elementary School is invited. We’re really looking for a good turn out – the weather should be perfect. Please join us even if you don’t have kids in your household – this is a fun way to meet neighbors and get involved in your community. There’s no charge for admission, but we do suggest that you bring a donation for Just Food, the Douglas County Food Bank (more information about the most needed items below).

We still need some help getting everything ready for the big event. If you can help with any of these things, please post it on the Pinckney Neighborhood Association facebook page or send an email to Pinckney.Neighborhood@gmail.com.

TRUNKS – booths, games, activities, etc. for the kids to enjoy. We have about 1o confirmed – we’d like to have 20! Set-up starts at 3:00.

PHOTOGRAPHER – to take pictures that will be posted to the PNA website and facebook pages.

VOLUNTEERS – particularly students, to help run the costume contest and various activities. We have Community Service certificates to show your involvement.

MOST NEEDED DONATIONS FOR JUST FOOD:

FOOD – Baby Food, Beans, Canned Meats (tuna & chicken), Canned Pasta (e.g., Spaghetti O’s), Canned Soup, Canned Vegetables, Cereal, Crackers, Hamburger Helper, Jelly, Juice, Pasta, Pasta Sauce, Peanut Butter, Pork & Beans, Rice.

PERSONAL CARE – Diapers, Toilet Paper

CASH – every dollar makes a difference – as little as 20 cents can provide a meal to someone in need

Invitation to “Streets Designed for Everyone” community discussion

 

 

The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department invites you to participate in a community discussion about how streets can be designed for everyone, no matter who they are or how they travel – walking, biking, taking transit or driving.

Two sessions are available on Thursday, October 24, 2013.

Session 1: 2-3:30 p.m. at the Community Health Facility, 200 Maine St., Lawrence
Session 2: 7-8:30 p.m. at the Douglas County Senior Center, 745 Vermont St., Lawrence

Jayhawk Jamboree Fall Regatta – Burcham Park – October 20th

The KU Rowing Team invites the Pinckney Neighborhood and all of Lawrence to join them on October 20th in Burcham Park for the Jayhawk Jamboree Fall Regatta. A Family Fun Zone opens at noon and the rowing team races start at 1:00. Open to the public. Big & Baby Jayhawks, KU spirit quad and pep band, live music, food vendors and lots of fun and excitement!

Trunk-or-Treat & Food Drive – We Need Your Trunk!

Pinckney Neighborhood Association is excited to announce the 3rd annual Trunk-or-Treat & Food Drive on October 26, 2013. This event is a wonderful opportunity for our large, multicultural, socioeconomically diverse neighborhood to gather together in support of building strong neighborhood and community ties. We take pride in pairing all our neighborhood gatherings with a public service event. Our Trunk-or-Treat has always been paired with a Food Drive to collect donations (food and funds) on behalf of Just Foods Douglas County (www.justfoodks.org). We have collected over 100 pounds of food each of the previous two years. We hope to at least double our contributions this year.

We are seeking families, groups, clubs, organizations, businesses and students to help with this year’s event by setting up a trunk, booth, game or activity. Our goal is to have 20 entries in order to boost community participation, thus furthering the goals of engagement between neighbors and contributions to Just Foods. All students assisting with the Trunk-or-Treat will receive a Certificate of Community Service. All participating groups, organizations, businesses, etc., will receive special mention on the PNA website and in our next quarterly newsletter.

Here’s what participating in the Trunk-or-Treat would entail:

• Set-up starts at 3 pm in the Lawrence Memorial Hospital parking lot (4th Street between Michigan & Arkansas – enter via Arkansas)
• The event is open for guests from 4 to 6 pm
• Decorate the trunk of your car, truck or van, or even a table, booth or tent
• Find great decorating ideas by doing an internet search for “trunk or treat”
• You can also have a game or activity for the kids to play
• Wear a costume (optional – but so much fun!)
• Hand out treats or prizes (PNA can help supplement your supply)
• Compete for best costume, best decorations, and best game/activity

If you aren’t able to provide a “trunk” but would still like to contribute, please consider providing some treats or prizes to hand out to the kids and donations for Just Food.

• Changing our Neighborhood Name

  Our neighborhood name of “Pinckney” was recently changed to “Pinkney.” This change occurred because Pinckney with a ‘c’ was associated with Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, a Revolutionary War general who signed the Constitution and who also was a slaveholder who believed slavery was fundamental to the American way of life (he owned a large plantation in South Carolina). Given this problematic history, neighborhood residents voted to change our neighborhood name. To learn more about the year-long process, go to our dedicated webpage. The final round of voting ultimately landed on the name of “Pinkney” in honor of William Pinkney, who gave a famous anti-slavery speech in 1789.
